Online Consignment Shopping: Where to Go For The Best Home Goods

I had so much fun writing about online consignment clothing sites I decided to continue the trend and write about consignment home goods this week. Buying previously owned merchandise is a great way to recycle and repurpose. Plus, it’s easy on the pocketbook and easy on the environment. And while craigslist and eBay are great places to find staples from stores like IKEA, Ethan Allen, and West Elm, there are some great sites for upscale home goods at prices considerably less than retail.

For luxury furniture and home goods my favorite site is Viyet. A subsidiary of Sotheby’s, Viyet carries high-end home furnishings whose authenticity has been verified by Viyet’s curators.

On the site, I found a Tidelli outdoor loveseat with ottoman in excellent condition for $6295; a Henredon Neoclassical style sofa, also in excellent condition, for $2000 and, for the serious antique lover, a pair of Louis XV-XVI Transitional Style Marquetry sideboards for $69,950. If you find the asking price for an item a bit too steep Viyet has the option to make an offer.

Along with great clothing, The RealReal has great home goods and their offerings range from high-end to more affordable fare. I spotted a crystal Tiffany & Co. ice bucket in very good condition for $66.50, which may be sold (to me) by the time you read this. I also found a Christofle silverplate teapot in very good condition for $725 and, if you’re up for a splurge, a $10,000 mahogany Dessin Fournir armoire in very good condition that would look fabulous in any home.

1stdibs is another online store with a wide range of home furnishings. You could treat yourself to a set of George III Mahogany Armchairs in excellent condition for $128,648.32 or satisfy your urge to buy with a Louis XVI Style Settee in good condition for $995.

Buying consignment pieces from these sites can be a win-win of great quality and low prices. However to avoid surprises check things like shipping and delivery charges, in-home assembly options, return policies and restocking fees.
